A Daily Schedule for Kids, According to Age

Toddlers are easily distractible curious creatures. They want to explore a new environment, not sleep in it. Not to mention, we all sleep better in our own beds. Keep the room as dark as possible when sleeping somewhere other than home. Bedtime is my FAVORITE time of the day (and not just because it means the kids are in bed!). It’s the most meaningful quality time I get with my kids.

Add in the fact that so many of us are juggling childcare with working from home and days can quickly spiral into chaos. Steal my best tips for your 1 year old’s daily routine! A predictable routine is essential for toddlers and this schedule is perfect for a 1 year old. This is the ONLY meal of the day that my partner is home for during the week. We make it a point to try and eat together at the table and talk about our day. I suggest making sure that you do something similar—make it a point to eat one meal a day with your family.

Year Old Meal Plan

Whether you’re a full-time stay-at-home mom, a caregiver or on an extended maternity leave, you’ll need LOTS of daily activities, indoor and outdoor, in your arsenal. Establishing a daily routine will make everyday transitions easier, and can help minimize power struggles and tantrums as your toddler grows. When kids know what to expect, and when to expect it, they are happier and more cooperative. That being said, it’s very important starting at 1, to develop a daily routine.

Toddlers are ready to learn how to follow a daily rhythm with their class! At each center, our incredible teachers create a schedule that works for their room. Around one year of age is when most babies drop a nap and switch from two naps to one nap per day. Some babies will do this slightly before one years old, while others will stay on two naps until closer to two years old. It doesn’t help that there isn’t one set schedule that applies to all babies and toddlers.

Jump to Your Week of Pregnancy

Most 1 year olds are on a two nap schedule, with a morning nap and an afternoon nap. I would advise keeping the morning nap until at least months old as this is when toddlers typically start fighting the morning nap and they no longer need it. Use them as a starting point to plan an itinerary that works for your family. This is the 1 nap a day schedule that we kept from months for our daughter Ellie. It kept our home running relatively smooth through the first two trimesters of my second pregnancy and kept our young toddler fed and well-rested. If you have a young toddler who still takes longer or more naps a day, enjoy it and don’t rush the transition!

The progress is welcome relief to Arthur who was angered at the timing of his injury. The only original programming that day will be the King's Speech - which will have already been shown on BBC One at 3pm - and When Tina Turner Came to Britain. Viewers could be forgiven for thinking it's 2021 with only a single change to BBC One's primetime schedule on December 25. Connect with our community members by starting a discussion. Forget early morning showers, if we woke up at 5am mine would demand to be downstairs and scream her head off until we took her downstairs too.

Simple One Year Old Feeding & Nap Schedule

If baby has shown many of the above signs, you know it’s time to get to work dropping the nap. After you’ve done that you’ll tackle the 1 nap schedule, which may take a bit to get used to. Baby takes longer to get to sleep for either the morning or the afternoon nap. He doesn’t need two long full naps every single day.

My oldest son stayed on two naps until he was 14 months old, while my younger son transitioned to one nap around 11 months old. All babies are different and have different sleep needs, so follow your baby’s leads to determine when they may be ready to drop to 1 nap. Most babies and toddlers thrive on structure and a predictable schedule every day. We love schedules for our kids and have started both on a flexible schedule or daily routine very early on. This example is for a toddler who’s still drinking bottles and has water with meals.

If your daily toddler schedule includes things like brushing teeth, eating a snack, and quiet time—this is great. It helps engrain healthy habits in your toddler that will stick with them. I have an almost 2 year old who is very needy in the mornings. I’m trying to wean him but it’s not really working. He screams and throws a fit if I don’t lay down with him and nurse him in the mornings. I try to get up before the kids for quiet time but he ALWAYS wakes up crying, and wanting me to go back to bed with him.

The final quarter of toddlers continue to nap until they’re five or six years old (crossing my fingers that my daughter falls in this bracket!). Your three-year-old needs an average of hours of sleep within a 24 hour period—and MOST three-year-old’s still nap. Tweak the toddler routine and adjust things until you find what works for you. My three-year-old would sleep MORE than three hours if we let her, and I am sad to say this probably will not last much longer.

It was helpful to be reminded that every child is somewhat different and fluctuations in their eating will occur and are normal. If you’re worried about picky eating, this post on what’s normal will help. The general rule of thumb is to consider if the child is growing, gaining weight, and meeting milestones. If the answers to all of those are yes, chances are very high that the kiddo is eating plenty.

Then as she gets more proficient/faster with eating, you could nudge it later. (We had a 5 pm dinner for the first two years of my first kiddo’s life for just this reason!) I hope that helps. Luckily, babies need to play, not be entertained.
